SHOPPERS can pick up goods at their leisure and check their blood pressure when they visit a supermarket this week.
Experts from South Derbyshire’s GP Referral Scheme are carrying out free health checks at the Swadlincote Sainsbury’s store, in Civic Way, on Friday, February 1, between 10am and 3pm. The Body MOTs see people answer questions about their lifestyle and take a few measurements and tests, including lung function and BMI (Body Mass Index). Support, where needed, is then given to help reduce the risk of disease and showcase ways to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Margaret Leedham, the healthy lifestyle hub manager for South Derbyshire, said: “Research shows that some people do not like to bother their GP with basic health checks, so free Body MOTs such as this are an effective way for people to have a general medical in a relaxed and informal setting.”
Information will also be available about the GP Referral Scheme, which helps those with a medical condition to get active through subsidised classes at local leisure centres.
Martyn Shore, from the Waist Wise initiative, will also give advice on how to lose weight healthily.
