RICKY Holmes hit a 24-minute hat-trick either side of half-time as League Two basement side Barnet battled back from going a goal down to hand Burton Albion a first defeat in four games.

The Brewers looked on course for a comfortable victory after striker Billy Kee had given them a 16th minute lead from the penalty spot on his return to the starting line-up, but Albion’s recent woes against the league’s strugglers continued at Underhill.

The Brewers took the lead from the penalty spot after midfielder Jacques Maghoma made ground into the box on the left before being tripped by Bees right-back Barry Fuller.

The referee pointed to the spot and Kee sent Bees keeper Graham Stack the wrong way having scored a hat-trick in a 6-3 victory the last time the Brewers visited Underhill.

The visitors dominated the opening half, but the hosts levelled in bizarre circumstances three minutes before half-time.

A poor clearance by goalkeeper Dean Lyness was played back towards his own goal by left-back Damien McCrory, who was under pressure, and the ball dropped to Holmes, standing all alone on the edge of the penalty area.

The striker kept his cool, calmly rounded Lyness and rolled the ball into the empty net.

Holmes added a second from the penalty spot seven minutes into the second half.

Substitute John Oster played a corner on the left short to left-back Elliot Johnson, whose cross struck winger Cleveland Taylor inside the penalty area.

The referee blew for handball and pointed to the spot, and Holmes blasted the spot-kick into the roof of the net.

Holmes completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute, but the goal was all about fellow striker Andy Yiadom.

Picking the ball up on the left, he took on and beat McCrory before picking Holmes out with a cut-back which was thumped into the net.

There was a glimmer of hope for the Brewers when they were awarded a second penalty four minutes into added time for a foul by substitute Curtis Weston on Maghoma, who converted from the spot.
