Giants outplayed by Wolves

Warrington overcame blizzard-like conditions at the Halliwell Jones Stadium to become only the second team to beat Huddersfield this season and move to within a point of the Super League leaders following their 28-2 triumph.

Stand-off Stefan Ratchford scored a try in each half and former Huddersfield captain Brett Hodgson finished with 16 points for the home side as they extended their winning run against the Giants to five matches and underline their status as title favourites. Chris Riley also crossed over for the home side.

Huddersfield captain Danny Brough gave his side the lead with a ninth-minute penalty after second rower Brett Ferres had been tackled high in front of the Warrington posts but it proved to be their only points.

Both teams deserved enormous credit for defying atrocious conditions to produce an entertaining game for the crowd of 9,797 but the Wolves took the spoils thanks largely to a magnificent defensive effort which kept the table-toppers try-less for the first time this year.

Meanwhile, Salford's miserable run at St Helens continued with a 14-10 defeat despite giving Nathan Brown's side a fright in a match played in atrocious conditions.

The Reds have not won on Merseyside since 1980 and have now lost 29 successive matches at Saints after tries from Ade Gardner and Francis Meli with Lewis Charnock adding the extras.

Salford had not troubled the scorers until Liam Foran crossed over with 12 minutes left and while Marc Sneyd crossed late on - and converted - there was not enough time to complete a comeback that had nonetheless ensured some Saints nerves.
