Winter bedding and garden chores

Written byBen Smith

Welcome to Garden King's Plant Doctor blog, where our experts discuss and answer all your gardening questions. This week I'm talking about winter bedding, checking your prepared hyacinths and general garden chores.

Winter Bedding

Brrrrrrr... chilly isn't it?! The weather has definitely turned colder, so it's time to fill your garden with lots of winter colour. Summer bedding really is past its best now and bright and beautiful winter bedding is now available.

Winter bedding will sit nicely among your spring bulbs and wallflowers. It will brighten up winter baskets and containers and most importantly - add colour and interest to those frosty mornings. By planting now you'll have flowers right through the winter and well into spring.

PansiesBefore you plant make sure your plants are well rooted and full of health. You also need to weed your borders before you plant as you don't want the bedding to have to compete with weeds for food and light. Harden off your plants by leaving them outside for a few days, this will get them used to the colder weather (which will be a far cry from the luxury warmth of the greenhouse or growing tunnel that they'll be used to). Add a good quality multipurpose compost and get planting!

Check on your prepared hyacinths

It's around 7-8 weeks since your prepared hyacinth bulbs were potted up. You're best to check on them now and make sure they're healthy and well rooted. Continue to water your potted bulbs occasionally and keep them somewhere nice and cool and dark. Leave them there for a few more weeks and fresh green shoots should start appearing.

Around the garden

Keep up with the leaf clearing and add them to the compost heap if they've not been victim of disease. Keep checking your lawns to make sure they have good drainage. Also add your old crops and bedding to the compost heap.
