THE Labour candidate for North West Leicestershire has hit out at plans to phase out in-patient beds at Ashby Hospital.
The 16 in-patient beds at the hospital will begin to be phased out on August 18 with the anticipation that all beds will be completely phased out by October 1.
Labour candidate Jamie McMahon said the decision will be met with much sadness.
He said: "I have been campaigning to protect health services in Ashby.
" I will watch closely to make sure the reassurances given by the NHS that the care needed in the community is in place truly happen. That's why I'm planning to go see these services for myself next month.
"The future of the building will be decided by the NHS in October and the protection of this historic site for local use is vital."
