YOUNGSTERS at a South Derbyshire club will be hoping that it is not a case of two buses coming at once when they take on a fund-raising challenge.
On Saturday, members of Donisthorpe Youth Club will be attempting to pull a double-decker bus over a distance of 35 minutes at Jungle Madness in Church Street to raise money for the club and the Rainbow Children’s Trust. The idea was that of youth club worker Darren Wileman, who said he took inspiration from something he saw as a child.
He told the Mail: “I saw it done years ago when I was a kid. We came up with other ideas such as a sponsored walk, but when I mentioned the bus pull the kids seemed to be intrigued because it’s different. At the moment we’ve got around 25 who have agreed to take part.
“They all seemed interested and up for it, so we decided to go ahead with it. Even the bus company who are loaning us the bus thought it was a great idea, albeit a little crazy, they’d never heard of it before but were up for supporting the local community.”
Darren says that the children are looking forward to the challenge and hopes that they will be able to achieve their goal without the need for staff to join in. The majority of those taking part are aged between 11 and 16 and will all pull the bus together in one go.
They have been busy gathering sponsorship funds which will be reinvested into facilities and maintenance at the club, which is entirely self-funded. It is hoped that the event will raise around £1,000 in total.
If successful, Darren hopes that the children will move onto a greater challenge next year. He continued: “We’ll be aiming to go for something bigger and better next year, such as trying to pull a fire engine. I don’t see why we won’t be able to do that if I’m honest. It’s all about being a little bit different and a bit crazy. We’re all just big kids really.”
The young people’s fund-raising event will run from 10.30am until 2.30pm at Jungle Madness in Church Street, Donisthorpe.
Anyone interested in setting up a stall can do so at a cost of £5, which will go towards youth club funds. For more information contact Darren on 01283 217792.
