SOUTH Derbyshire’s MP Heather Wheeler said ‘changes had to be made’ to the way further education was funded after the Government came under fire over potential jobs losses at Burton and South Derbyshire College.
The Tory politician defended the Coalition’s decision to cut funding by more than £2 million, which college bosses have blamed for potential redundancies at its Burton and Swadlincote campuses.
Union bosses at Unison said up to 100 memebrs of staff could lose their jobs following the move, but Mrs Wheeler pinned the blame on the previous Labour Government.
She said: “Following the dire financial state inherited from Labour, changes had to be made in the way money flowed to Government-funded projects. This Government also realised youngsters needed a different emphasis to courses and way of learning delivered in the past.
“I know that the leadership team at the college will do everything they can to make sure our youngsters have the best education possible and I hope that everyone involved in the negotiations will get the best outcome for the students and staff alike.”
