THE man who hopes to become Burton’s next MP has spoke in support of genocide victims.

Labour’s candidate for the town Jon Wheale spoke ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday, January 27.

The former army Captain, who visited the German concentration camp Bergen-Belson while serving in the Royal Artillery, said victims of the Holocaust should never be forgotten.

He said: “Remembering victims of the Holocaust is vital to reminding ourselves of the prejudice and intolerance which fuels such reprehensible acts and why we should do everything in our power to stop them.”

This year’s memorial day falls exactly 69 years after the liberation of the German death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Mr Wheale added: “It would be very easy to forget about those who were killed so brutally.

“But to do so would not only insult the victims’ collective memory but also disregard the fact that the lessons of the Holocaust have never been learned.”
