THE ‘scourge’ of racism must always be challenged, according Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Burton.

Jon Wheale made the comments as the United Nations prepared to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination tomorrow.

He said: “Although the UK has made big strides in the past 50 years to make life better for people of different racial origin, it still hasn’t gone far enough.

“Far too many people are still subject to racial abuse - including here in Burton and Uttoxeter – and falling victim to racism.

“From the sports pitch to the workplace there is no excuse for racism.

“I urge everyone to be on the lookout and to do their utmost to challenge racism whenever and wherever it is found.

“If we fail to do so we merely allow it to erode the ties that bind us together - ties which make an attack on one of us an attack on all of us.”
