NEARLY all the teams around Burton Albion in the League Two promotion race won last night, making the Brewers' 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers all the more vital.

Only a defeat for Plymouth Argyle, and the fact that Southend and Oxford United did not play, helped Gary Rowett's men, as Rochdale, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe maintained their lead at the top, while York City entered the play-offs.

Portsmouth slipped closer towards an exit from the Football League following a thumping 3-0 defeat at Sky Bet League Two leaders Rochdale.

Pompey were only relegated from the Premier League four years ago but years of financial turmoil have left them hovering worryingly just above the trapdoor into the Conference.

Goals from Matthew Lund, Ian Henderson and Peter Vincenti condemned them to a sixth game without victory, a period in which they have managed just a single goal.

The 2008 FA Cup winners would have fallen into the relegation places, but for 10-man AFC Wimbledon - who scored in the 98th minute against the Brewers - snatching a 2-2 draw at Northampton in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Sammy Moore struck deep into the added time to deny the Cobblers, who remained two points from safety.

Wimbledon led on 14 minutes through George Francomb, but Jack Midson saw red on 28 minutes and then Darren Carter converted from the spot. When Carter added a second on 79 minutes, Northampton appeared set for a much-needed win, only for Moore to step in.

In the title race, Scunthorpe and Chesterfield kept pace with leaders Dale as they both won - the former's unbeaten run now standing at 23 games.

Sam Winnall scored in either half as Scunthorpe won 2-0 at Cheltenham, who missed the chance to pull a goal back when Matt Richards failed to convert a 61st-minute penalty.

Chesterfield beat Morecambe 1-0 thanks to a 19th-minute James O'Shea goal.

Fleetwood beat Bristol Rovers 3-1 after goals from Antoni Sarcevic, Mark Roberts and David Ball. Rovers substitute Ellis Harrison grabbed a 79th-minute consolation goal.

In-form York climbed into the play-off places with a 1-0 home win over last-placed Torquay. The Minstermen have now won six on the spin - keeping five clean sheets in that run - and had Will Hayhurst's 11th-minute goal for their latest triumph.

Eliot Richards ensured Exeter took the honours 2-1 in their Devon derby against Plymouth.

Reuben Reid and Liam Sercombe had traded goals before Richards decided matters seven minutes from the end.

Mansfield edged away from the relegation zone with a 4-2 win at Hartlepool.

Pools battled back from conceding a 10th-minute James Jennings opener as Marlon Harewood and Luke James sent them ahead. Harewood missed a penalty in between and it proved costly as the Stags battled back.

Jennings levelled on 72 minutes before Matt Rhead and Jamie McGuire struck in the final 10 minutes.

There were goalless draws in the games between Newport and Bury as well as Dagenham's meeting with Accrington.
