A TEAM of four rowers from Burton Leander Rowing Club will represent the East Midlands at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta (JIRR) on Saturday.
The club’s Boys J16 Coxless Quad crew of Jordi Simons, Matt Haywood, James Manton and Joe Raymond will go up against the best from around the UK at Holme Pierrepont, the national watersports centre in Nottingham.
Haywood comes into the crew after missing the trials, held on Sunday, March 30, also at Holme Pierrepont, with a Oli Benton from rivals Trent RC taking his place and helping Leander to qualify.
At the trials, both junior boys and girls from 11 clubs in the East Midlands took part in racing against each other to find the fastest crews to put forward to the JIRR, in the Singles, Doubles, Quads and Eights.
Burton Leander entered just two crews, a J16 Coxless Quad and a WJ15 Double. Both crews performed excellently on the day.
The boys not only won their race to qualify, but posted the fastest time of the day over the 1500m course, finishing in just 5mins, 8secs.
The Girls WJ15 Double of Ellen Tweed (stroke) and Tasha Dukes (bow) put on a good performance, finishing second just behind Nottingham Rowing Club in a very respectable 6mins 19secs, but unfortunately they will be representing the region this weekend at JIRR.
