USERS of legal highs in North West Leicestershire are being warned of the effects substances can have on their health as police prepare to crack down on selling and distribution.
The products, which are officially called New Psychoactive Substances, or NPS, are known to be sold as 'research chemicals' or 'herbal incense'.
However, when they have been tested it has been found they contain both illegal and dangerous chemicals.
Leicestershire Police has now launched Operation Nitrox to help in the fight against the sale of substances.
Detective Superintendent Andy Lee, who is in charge of Operation Nitrox, said: "Deaths from using these so-called 'legal highs' are increasing and we shouldn't underestimate the danger posed by these substances. Anecdotally we're beginning to hear that much younger people than we previously thought are experimenting with these chemicals, and this has to be addressed."
