WAYNE Thornhill believes that tonight’s Doodson Sports Cup third round clash at Loughborough Dynamo, kick-off 7.45pm, is just the game his Gresley side need to ease themselves back into action.

The Moatmen have not kicked a ball in anger since December 28, with their last three games – including one against tonight’s opponents – falling foul of the weather.

And caretaker boss Thornhill, still standing in for the absent Martin Rowe, said: “It’s a nice game to cut our teeth with before we start the second half of the season.

“We’ll try to give everyone we can a game, but it will be the same squad that would have faced Goole on Saturday.

“If the last few games had gone ahead, we’d possibly have played some younger lads, but we need to get some games played now.

“We want to be successful this season and to get some silverware would be nice.

“And we’ve got a great chance to do well in this competition.”

Thornhill was also keen to give something back to the fans, who have had to watch their team struggle for consistency in this season of transition, with Gresley currently fourth-bottom of the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South.

“The fans have got to be rewarded for their attendance and support,” he said.

“It hasn’t been the best season in the league, and the lads really do appreciate the support.

“We’re a young side and we’re adjusting, but we’re getting there.

“It’s vital that we put in a performance.”

Thornhill is yet to actually take charge of a game since stepping up from the coaching staff to guide first-team affairs, and admitted: “Frustrating just about sums it up.

“We’re hoping to get a game under our belts, as we were only one of two games called off on Saturday, so we need to get some matches played.

“I didn’t think the weather was that bad on Saturday, but I suppose that speaks volumes about the pitch quality (at the Moat Ground).

“Until we get a new ground we are stuck with it though.

“I understand there has been a deal agreed to build houses on the current ground, so that indicates some progress, but apart from that, I’m the wrong man to ask.”

GRESLEY FROM: Morch, Hanson, Barrett, Guest, Harrison, O’Connell, Grice, Langston, Piliero, Spencer, Steadman, Roome, Guy, Graves, Turville, Holmes, Austin, Lyons.
