BURTON’S MP has called for an emergency meeting with hospital chiefs where he will ask them to scrap a controversial parking system – in a bid to put an end to the misery being endured by patients and visitors.
Andrew Griffiths made moves to open talks with senior bosses at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital after members of the public reacted furiously to the publication of results of a review into a system that has plagued those at the site since it was introduced last year.
Bosses at the Belvedere Road facility have revealed they will be making major changes to the parking situation after a flurry of complaints from users.
However, no changes were announced to the system whereby people have to remember what time they enter the car park – a move which Mr Griffiths branded ‘ridiculous’ and prompted him to call for the return of previous parking methods.
He said: “It is very clear that the new system has left people dazed, baffled and downright stumped and this is simply not good enough at a place where people need to go without any added pressure.
“I am calling for a meeting with hospital bosses in a bid to get the latest system scrapped and the old one put back into place.
“People need to go to Queen’s Hospital and be able to use a simpler and easier method of paying for parking, not endure the pain and misery that this new one has heaped on so many.”
The review, launched in the wake of an outpouring of negativity towards the much-derided system, concluded that the Parking Eye-operated system was here to stay.
Changes to be made include easier-to-use keyboards on pay machines, new tariffs, change machines being provided and improved instructions and signage being put in place on site.
Hospital chief executive Helen Ashley said: “I deeply regret any distress, confusion and upset that patients and their relatives and carers have experienced since the new automatic number plate recognition system was introduced.
“We do understand that those who visit our hospital can be stressed and worried already, and the last thing we want to do is add to their concerns by making paying for parking a difficult process.”
