BURTON’S MP has spoken of his delight and he and his wife were named as honorary members of the Staffordshire Regimental Association.
Andrew Griffiths told the Mail that he was left ‘beaming with delight’ after learning that he and his wife Kate had been handed the distinction by senior chiefs at the organisation.
The pair were handed the honour for the tireless work they undertake in promoting the cause as well as their efforts to support troops from the area who are fighting for their country across the world.
He said: “Both Kate and I really cannot believe that we have received this fantastic honour.
“The Staffordshire Regimental Association is much loved and has many links with Burton.
“This is something that they do not do for many people, which means that it takes on an even greater significance for us both.
“The association is something that I will always champion and that we both are very proud to support.”
The MP most recently organised a hugely successful campaign to gather up gifts to send to troops across the world as part of his Support our Soldiers appeal.
More than 200 boxes were sent to servicemen and servicewomen last December just in for Christmas.
Mick Teasel, secretary of the Burton branch, said: “Andrew has always been a strong supporter of the Burton branch of the Staffordshire Regiment, and always attends and supports our events.
“This is recognition of that, and all the work he does standing up for our armed forces.”
The MP has fought several battles to support Staffordshire’s armed forces.
He was part of a group of MPs who was fighting for the identity of the former Staffordshire regiment not be lost.
Mr Griffiths signed a strongly worded letter to David Cameron after the Government revealed that the 3rd Battalion Mercian Regiment would cease to exist by 2020.
More recently he has begun a battle to try and secure the future of army cadets in the town after it was announced that Coltman House, in Hawkins Lane, which homes a territorial army regiment, had been deemed surplus to requirements.
