THE MP for North West Leicestershire is looking for reassurances over the future of the area’s only opencast coal mine after the firm which operates the site revealed it needs financial help.
MP Andrew Bridgen revealed that he had reached out to UK Coal, the firm that is just 17 months into a four-and-a-half-year mining operation to extract 1.5 million tonnes of coal and fireclay from its Minorca surface mine, in Measham, after it appealed for urgent financial help from the Government and private investors to help keep the mine in the area, and others, open.
He said: “Residents need some reassurances about the future of the mine and its restoration.
“People rightly want to know what’s going on and I have written to the minister seeking answers.
“In the meantime, no planning permission should be granted to extend the mine.”
