Matt finish adds more gloss to Albion's home record

MATT Paterson was the toast of the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday as Burton Albion celebrated Gary Rowett’s manager of the month award in winning style.

The Scot came in from the cold on a distinctly chilly afternoon to score a stunning 84th-minute winner that swept the Brewers back into the thick of the League Two promotion battle.

Paterson had been a frustrated onlooker for almost two months after dropping out of the squad with a groin injury.

But he wasted no time in seizing the chance to impress — just as he had done on his debut against Rochdale back in September.

Paterson won the spoils at Spotland with a cracking shot and came off the bench  to deliver a reminder of his shooting power with an absolute belter — his fourth of the season — to send Torquay United home empty handed.

The Gulls were often the better team but it was the quality of Albion’s finishing that proved decisive.

Paterson’s spectacular curler into the far corner came after Calvin Zola had superbly tucked away a 15-yard shot to put the Brewers level in the 59th minute, just when it appeared they would struggle to respond to a Ryan Jarvis goal for the visitors before the break.

The goals secured a precious victory for Rowett’s men, whose home form remains the foundation of their push for honours.

Albion have lost only twice in 14 games at the Pirelli this term, amassing 30 of their 42 points in the process.

The victory also went some way to allaying fears they might suffer their own version of the double-dip recession after a history of sliding to oblivion after the turn of the year in previous campaigns.
