MOTORISTS have found themselves in rush-hour misery after work to locate a faulty cable caused mile-long tailbacks.

Electricity distribution network operator, Western Power Distribution, is due to finish its work on the A444 Main Street, Overseal tomorrow – two days ahead of schedule, but caused anger among drivers today.

It is also believed the faulty cable caused problems with electricity in some surrounding homes overnight at the weekend although it is not clear how many were affected.

Today, motorists driving to and from the A42 and Swadlincote were caught up in traffic jams caused by two-way traffic lights on Main Street, stretching as far back at Rickman’s Corner, at Linton Heath, and into Acresford Road in the opposite direction.

A spokesman for Western Power Distribution said: “We are carrying out repair work to an underground cable.

“The work may have caused some disruption to power overnight and we apologise for any inconvenience caused for customers.”
