A PUB has been slated by environmental health inspectors after mouse droppings were found in a store room.

The Monks Bridge in Church Road, Stretton, was given two out of a possible five marks by officials from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Rate my Place scheme.

The pub’s landlady, however, described the council’s verdict as ‘disappointing’ and ‘upsetting’.

A report into cleanliness and hygiene standards at the Marston’s venue said: “In the rear storeroom, old mouse droppings were found. This demonstrates that the area has not been cleaned sufficiently. You must... ensure that this is not an ongoing infestation.”

The council inspector also found dog hairs in the kitchen.

The report claimed chopping boards were damaged and needed to be replaced or repaired because they had become difficult to clean.

The inspector also ordered the pub to block a gap on the bottom of the store room door which she claimed was large enough for pests to crawl through.

Concerns were also raised about the storage of food and the methods of cleaning used in the kitchen.

Sadie Aston, the pub’s licensee, told the Mail: “Everything brought up in the council report has been addressed.

“I would never serve food that I would not eat myself or serve for my family.

“I would welcome any customer or visitor to look at our kitchen to see just how clean it actually is.

“I was incredibly disappointed and very upset about this report for a long time. We take hygiene incredibly seriously.”

The landlady denied her dog had access to the kitchen and said pests were not able to enter the store room.

She also said only four mouse droppings were discovered in the premises and insisted there was no infestation.
