POLICE across Staffordshire and Derbyshire have been placed on high alert due to a 'severe' risk of a terrorist attack on the UK.
The new terror threat level has been put in place following new developments in Iraq and Syria.
The 'severe' level is one of the highest on the scale, second only to an imminent attack.
Home secretary Theresa May, who submitted the new alert, said: "The increase in the threat level is related to developments where terrorist groups are planning attacks."
A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: "We have a visible presence in Derbyshire, with the aim of protecting the public from any threats.
"We encourage the public to be vigilant and if they have any concern about activities or behaviour of people in their area, they should call police immediately on 101."
