A NEWLYWED couple became the envy of die-hard Burton Albion fans when they presented the man of the match award following Saturday’s game.
Lovebirds Gavin and Kayleigh Eaton, of Wye Dale, Swadlincote, arrived at the Pirelli Stadium in the middle of the Brewers League Two clash with Oxford United, after tying the knot earlier in the day in Church Gresley.
Following the match, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Oxford, the couple presented the man of the match magnum of Champagne to Albion’s number 21 Marcus Holness.
The happy couple then went on to celebrate their wedding reception, which included speeches and entertainment, with 190 friends and family in the stadium’s Albion Suite.
Delivery driver Gavin, 35, who admitted to being a big football fan, said the scoreline did not put a dampener on their special day.
He said: “I didn’t know there was going to be a game on when we booked. The fact that there was a game on made it even better.
“We were told about a month ago we were going to present the man of the match award. We were both quite excited about it.”
Kayleigh, 28, a neo-natal nurse, said: “Everybody has been brilliant. It has been an amazing day and better than we ever could have thought.”
She added that she had been friends with Gavin since she was a teenager but the pair only became an item after meeting again on a night out when she was 23.
Kayleigh said: “We have known each other for years since I was working in the pub.
“He used to walk in and light up the whole room. I knew that I wanted to talk to him and everybody else wanted to talk to him and be near him.
“Then we met again in a bar in Burton and got talking about old times, then we met again the next day.”
Gavin popped the question in the couple’s living room on Valentine’s Day last year, which Kayleigh said was totally unexpected.
The couple will now jet off on their honeymoon to Mexico.
A spokesman for the club said: “Everybody at Burton Albion wishes Gavin and Kayleigh all the very best on their special day and for the future.”
