COUNTY councillors will decide next week whether to back a programme which aims to put communities in charge of their future destiny.

If approved, the Communities in Charge programme will help groups and individuals in North West Leicestershire to identify and tackle problems, encourage both informal and formal volunteering, and support councillors in their role as community leaders.

A report to Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet also outlines how communities can play a key role in helping to support families, an ageing population, healthy communities and economic growth.

Blake Pain, the county council’s lead member for the Big Society and related grant aid, said: “We already have a strong track record in helping communities to identify local needs and aspirations through parish and neighbourhood plans and community forums.

“Now we want to help address the practical requirements of communities by giving them access to meeting places, small grants, advice and support as well as an opportunity for them to influence change.”

Members will be told that the programme does not require additional funding to the £500,000 allocated from April 2011.

Cabinet members will discuss the proposal at 2pm on Wednesday, January 16.
