A MAN accused of stealing from two Burton shops is due back in court next month.

Andrew Smith, 42, of Calais Road, Burton, is charged with taking meat valued at £68.65 from Sainsbury's in Burton on July 23, and lamb from the Co-op on August 6. He appeared at Burton Magistrates' Court on August 18 to answer the first charge, but it was adjourned until August 20 so that both could be brought together. However, he failed to appear.

Magistrates were told Smith had travelled to Peterborough so that stitches could be removed from his eye after he received treatment for cataracts.

Smith will now attend Cannock Magistrates' Court on September 23 to answer both charges. He answers conditional bail not to enter Sainsbury's or the Co-op in Burton and must report to Burton Police Station between 8am and 10am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
