A CHURCH has said it has taken a step forward after being allowed to take over a pub which has been derelict for five years.

Burton Christadelphians have now been given permission to transform the dilapidated former Boathouse Inn, in The Dingle, Stapenhill, into its new home, enabling it to move from its current cramped premises in Blackpool Street.

Paul Tovell, a member of the church, said: “It is quite a big step forward. To have the planning application granted means we can progress with our plans

“We have been looking for a new place for three years

“It means we will have enough space to grow properly and provide a safe place for the children attending Sunday school, and make the building fit for purpose

“It is really good news.

“Our next plan is to start working out what we are going to do with it because as previously stated it needs a lot of work but it means that we can go away and complete the purchase.

“We have been investigating various options about what we will do with the drainage.”

The application was originally lodged with East Staffordshire Borough Council in September but was subsequently withdrawn due to concerns over the drainage strategy for the site, which is not connected to mains sewers. However, it was resubmitted after smoothing over the plans and has now been given the green light.

A new base was needed as the church had outgrown its home of almost 60 years, while the Boathouse has become a bone of contention with residents since it closed in October 2007.

Under the plans, the existing first-floor restaurant will become the main hall, the first-floor kitchen an ante room, the ground-floor lounge the main Sunday school room, and the existing cellar extension the kitchen.

The building would be open from 9am to 11pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 9am to 8pm on Sundays.
