POLICE and retailers in Ashby have launched a 'Safe Area' scheme that provides protection for vulnerable people.
The scheme, involving the North West Leicestershire Retail Crime Initiative, will offer support and assistance to anybody who feels vulnerable, threatened or distressed while in the area.
Staff will be able to offer basic support including a place to sit down and contact friends, relatives or the emergency services if required.
PCSO Jason Harriman said: "We are fortunate that Ashby is a relatively low crime area. However, there are times when people need assistance for a wide range of matters."
Retailer Dean O'Shea said: "It will help ensure those who are feeling overwhelmed and vulnerable can get support."
