BURTON Albion kept up their title bid with an emphatic 9-1 victory from their trip to the Potteries on Sunday to play mid-table Newcastle Town.
The Brewers started well and raced into a 4-0 lead in the first 25 minutes with braces from Amie Savva and Ruby Hallam.
The Brewers headed into the break 5-0 to the good as Sophie Davies (pictured) continued her goal-scoring form with number five just before the half-time whistle with a right foot strike over the keeper’s head and into the corner of the net.
The second half started with Burton working hard against the wind and the underfoot conditions, but goal six arrived thanks to a neat job from Darcie Sanders from the edge of the box on 50 minutes.
In the 54th minute, Albion keeper Vicky Wilsoncroft was injured in a challenge with the Newcastle striker and the game was delayed for 45 minutes for the emergency services to arrive.
The game restarted with centre half Beth Jones becoming the stand in goalkeeper for the rest of the game.
Further goals came from Satishna Uppal, Natasha Allderidge and a second from winger Davies to seal the three points.
Wilsoncroft was released from North Staffs Hospital on Sunday night and advised to rest up, and will be checked again by doctors today to see if she will be okay for this Sunday’s game at home to Newcastle Town.
