PUPILS at William Allitt School have been decorating poppies for a special event to take place in September to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The large wooden poppies were donated to Swadlincote & District Royal British Legion by Central Joinery of Swadlincote.

They were then passed on to the school, in Sunnyside, Newhall, where art and design teacher Katy Ford and a group of pupils have worked hard decorating them with their own unique designs.

The poppies will be used to decorate the trees on The Delph in Swadlincote town centre for a commemorative Drumhead Service which is being organised jointly by The Royal British Legion and South Derbyshire District Council.

The service will take place at 11am on Saturday, September 6.
