MORE than 300 cannabis plants have been discovered after police swooped on two drugs factories in Burton.

A 22-year-old Vietnamese man was arrested and has subsequently been charged after around 300 of the plants were seized from a flat in Victoria Road, after officers were tipped off by the landlord.

The haul, which was said by police to be of significant value, has since been destroyed.

Sergeant Bob Champeau, of Burton Police, said: “The landlord and owner of the dwelling has captured the male who has apparently being living in the premises and acting as a grower of up to 300 mature cannabis plants.

“The 22-year-old male was apprehended thanks to the excellent work of the landlord, to whom we are very grateful for his proactive work at the scene.

“He has been charged with two offences relating to the production of cannabis.”

A further 20 plants were discovered at a flat in Ashley Court, off Ashby Road, Winshill, yesterday.

Officers remained at the flat for some time following the early-morning raid, as the cannabis plants were removed to be assessed by forensic officers.

Staffordshire Police said that no arrests had yet been made following the second find.

Officers praised the efforts of the landlord following the discovery in Victoria Road last Wednesday, and warned other property owners to make sure they knew who they were renting a property to.

Sergeant Champeau added: “We remind landlords to ensure they have face-to-face contact and that proper contracts are drawn up before allowing people to rent properties.

“They should avoid cash up front deals and ensure they are 100 per cent sure of someone’s legitimacy and identification.

“Damaged caused to dwellings can be hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“I’ve been in dwellings that have been completely ruined by growers.”
