ASBO lout sent down

Written byJOSHUA TAYLOR

A YOB who terrorised women and children at a mother-and-baby unit in Swadlincote has been given a two-year antisocial behaviour order (ASBO) and jailed for 12 months.

The order bans Peter Williamson (pictured), 18, of Coton Park, Linton, from entering the town centre or Alexandra Road, where the unit is located.

Derby Crown Court heard the yob, who had a hand in plaster at the time, had also been involved in a fight in Oxford Street, Church Gresley. The youth he fought is still being hunted by police.

Williamson approached the mother-and-baby unit and upset people inside by banging on the windows to ‘impress’ his friends and have a ‘good laugh’.

Talking about Williamson’s pattern of offending, prosecutor Sarah Allen said: “The concern is low-level public nuisance, caused by youths hanging around local shops and confronting people as they go into the shops.

“This is the sort of behaviour the police are trying to prevent so the residents of Swadlincote have confidence to go out to the shops without a problem.”

Williamson pleaded guilty to charges of affray and breaching a previous ASBO.

Judge Ebrahim Mooncey sentenced Williamson to a year in prison, as well as imposing a new, two-year ASBO.

The judge told him: “People don’t want to go to the shops and see a fully-fledged fight going on. They want to live in peace.”

He said the baby unit incident also ‘upset people’.

Judge Mooncey added: “You thought what you did was a good laugh, impressed your friends and you probably got a lot of fun out of it.

“But people in the unit are vulnerable and don’t want people banging on doors and windows.”

Stuart Newsam, defending, said alcohol had played a part in Williamson’s ‘unenviable record of dishonesty, violence and public nuisance’.

Williamson (pictured right) had immediately admitted being involved in the street trouble, although claimed he did not start the confrontation at 7.30pm on January 4.

• THE Mail recently reported that Joshua Matlock, 20, formerly of Small Thorn Place, Woodville, had been given a three-year ASBO because of his ‘history of offending’.
