BRITAIN is losing its bees fast and only urgent Government action will stop it, an environmentalist has warned.
Chris Crean, who represents the West Midlands, including Burton, for Friends of the Earth (FoE), said bees were vital to our way of life, helping gardens, parks and farms thrive.
“The British public is waking up to this issue,” he said.
“The big question is: will (Prime Minister David) Mr Cameron make 2013 the year of the bee by agreeing a bee action plan?”
He spoke after FoE sent two giant bees to Downing Street in a bid to sting the Government into action.
The bees – two of the pressure group’s activists in costume – delivered more than 64,000 demands for action from UK residents.
As part of its Bee Cause campaign, FoE wants the Government to restore bee habitats, reduce pesticide use and protect every bee species.
Bee numbers have fallen fast and two bumblebee species are already extinct.
