Aggregate firm says job losses are 'inevitable

UP to 13 staff at a quarry near Burton face an uncertain future after its owner announced that ‘hundreds of jobs’ at operations across the country could be under threat due to business ‘drying up’.

The firm revealed that demand for its products — including asphalt, concrete and cement — had fallen by more than 10 per cent during the year and was expected to drop again by a further five or six per cent in 2013.

A spokesman for the company said: “We can confirm that we are currently undertaking a review of production capacity across the whole country.

“We are producing too much product and don’t have enough customers.

“The review looks set to highlight a 10 per cent cut in staff but this will be across the whole of the firm’s operations.”

Hanson is made up of three divisions — Hanson Aggregates, Hanson Concrete, and Hanson Asphalt and Contracting.

The firm is owned by German company Heidelberg Cement.

The Barton quarry produces 750,000 million tonnes of sand and gravel a year, supplying both local businesses and Hanson concrete operations throughout the region.

The spokesman added: “We just don’t know at this minute the number of jobs that may go, will see staff relocated or asked to change roles.

“What we can say is that workers at the quarries, such as the one in Barton, are skilled people and we recognise that we don’t want to lose those skills.

“We could do no worse than get rid of these skilled people only for the market to pick up and find ourselves on the back foot due to too many cuts.

“The findings of the review will be published at the end of October but until then, we don’t know how many jobs, what jobs or where will be impacted.

“When we know, we can start consulting with employees about the next stage of the process, which includes redeployment to another role before redundancies are considered.”
