All hail to the top ale writers

THE top beer writers in Britain will descend on Burton later this month to celebrate the town’s brewing heritage.

The British Guild of Beer Writers has organised a ‘meaning of beer’ seminar which will be held at the National Brewery Centre in Horninglow Street.

The writers will receive presentations on the subjects including malt, hops and the meaning of beer.

The organisation said in a statement: “The day will be chaired by Dr Harry White, who has put together a formidable list of speakers — world experts in their fields of malt, hops and brewing.

“Our A-list of brewing experts include Colin Davies of the Maltsters’ Association and Trevor Roberts of Steiner Hop.

“They are two of the four speakers in the morning session and will talk about developments in the world of malt and hops.”

The statement continued: “In the afternoon our attention will turn to beer itself when two of the country’s leading brewers, Toby Heasman of Hall and Woodhouse and Stuart Howe of Sharps, will describe how to design a beer and give it quality, balance and drinkability.”

The delegates at the meeting on February 28 will also go on a pub crawl around town to sample some of the best ale Burton has to offer.

Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths, chairman of the parliamentary beer group, has thrown his weight behind the event.

The announcement from the British Guild of Beer Writers means this month’s seminar will be another major coup for the National Brewery Centre.

The tourist attraction last year hosted the Campaign for Real Ale’s annual beer festival, which pulled in hundreds of enthusiasts to sample more than 100 ales from breweries across the country.
