Arboretum to mark genocide memorial day

Written byBY RICH STOKES

THE National Memorial Arboretum is to hold an event commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Alrewas-based centre will mark the liberation of the Nazis’ Second World War Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by staging activities this weekend.

These will include reading the United Nations’ Statement of Commitment, a pledge acknowledging the genocide and promising action to prevent a repetition, and a candle lighting ceremony.

This will be held at 10.40am on Sunday.

Visitors will also be able to view the tree dedicated to conflict diarist Anne Frank and take an onsite story walk on Saturday led by professional storyteller Maria Whatton and volunteer guide Richard Thorpe.

They will also be able to view a photographic display in the visitors’ centre.

This year’s theme, ‘Communities together: Build a Bridge’, will be aimed at celebrating difference and ensuring respect for all.
