Area has some of best and worst schools in the country
BURTON and South Derbyshire are home to some of the strongest and weakest performing schools in the country, figures have shown in new performance tables.
Abbot Beyne School in Winshill had just 37 per cent of pupils gain five GCSEs, including maths and English, at grade A* to C last year.
Meanwhile, £6,980-a-term Repton School topped the table with a score of 93 per cent.
Nationally 58.2 per cent of pupils reach the five good GCSEs benchmark, according to the Department for Education figures.
When comparing schools in the Mail’s circulation area, Repton School was followed by Abbots Bromley School for Girls, another fee-paying institution, with an 82 per cent pass rate.
John Taylor High School in Barton under Needwood scored 72 per cent, John Port School in Etwall clocked in at 68 per cent, and Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Sports College in Stapenhill gained 64 per cent.
These were followed by William Allitt School in Newhall with a 61 per cent pass rate, the de Ferrers Academy in Horninglow with 58 per cent, Granville Sports College in Woodville and Paget High School in Branston, both with 51 per cent.
The Pingle School in Swadlincote and Paulet School in Stapenhill gained 46 and 45 per cent respectively.
At the bottom of the table was Abbot Beyne, with 37 per cent of children gaining five A* to C grades, including maths and English.
The school was only just above the national floor target of 35 per cent.
Schools Minister Nick Gibb, speaking about the national figures, said: “Today’s figures reveal a shocking waste of talent in many schools across the country.
“All too often, pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds aren’t given the same opportunities as their peers.
“But there are great examples of schools achieving the best for their disadvantaged pupils. If they can get it right, then so can all schools.”
Burton and South Derbyshire College scored a 77 per cent success rate for students gaining three A-levels.
