The Campaign for Real Ale has revealed that it believes that at least 11 watering holes closed their doors for the final time during the past decade.

This comes after a new report revealed that the figure put the district among the worst-hit towns, which also included the likes of Wolverhampton and Blackburn.

Nik Antona, national director of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), told the Mail: “Over the last decade, we have calculated that we have lost at least 11 pubs in the South Derbyshire area.

“Although the figures look quite dramatic, it is not really that out of the ordinary compared to the rest of the country.

“South Derbyshire is normally a fairly solid area and had recently seen the arrival of a new offering in way of the Tall Chimney at The Pipeworks, in Swadlincote.

“The question that has to be asked about these pubs is are they a viable business that is serving the needs of the community.”

The pubs that have closed include two each in Church Gresley, Castle Gresley and Newhall, with one each in Midway, Hartshorne, Cauldwell, Walton and Linton.

Mr Antona, a member of the Burton and South Derbyshire CAMRA branch, added: “We will always fight the closure of pubs but serious thought has to be put into looking at what the business provides and if it is in fact meeting those requirements.

“Pubs are a community asset and it is great to see that councils in the district use the CAMRA pub viability list, which tests how well the pub is performing, before approving plans to allow a pub to be changed into another businesses.”

Mr Antona also revealed that the figure could in fact be higher due to the way Area named as one of the that CAMRA splits up its area coverage.

This means that areas such as Hilton, Repton and Melbourne, although being classed as South Derbyshire, were not included in the latest figures.
