POLICE have arrested a 33-year-old man in relation to an alleged assault during an amateur football match.
The man, who is from the Burton area, was detained yesterday morning on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm following an incident during a game between Eton Athletic and Real Medina at Eton Park Recreation Ground, in Burton, on Saturday.
Referee Dave Clarke was left hospitalised for two days with a fractured cheekbone following the alleged headbutting incident.
The 63-year-old, who has been officiating matches for 37 years in the town, is now recovering at home.
An official investigation has been launched by the Birmingham County Football Association after the alleged incident resulted in the match being abandoned.
As the Mail went to press, the man was still being questioned by police.
