FIREFIGHTERS in Burton and South Derbyshire downed tools and took part in industrial action on Christmas Eve as part of an ongoing row over pensions and retirement ages.
Crews from Burton’s Moor Street station and Swadlincote fire station stopped working for five hours from 7pm.
Fire chiefs in both areas said that no calls were received in East Staffordshire and South Derbyshire while the strike action was taking place.
A spokesman for Staffordshire and Fire and Rescue Service said: “We only dealt with one incident, which took place in North Staffordshire, and apart from that people had a safe evening.”
Hopes that industrial action by members of the Fire Brigades Union might be averted by further talks on the day did not come to fruition.
Firefighters are also planning to strike for six hours from 6.30pm on December 31 and for two hours from 6.30am on January 3 in a bid to get a fairer deal over changes to work practices.
