Back to school for fathers and grandfathers

Written byRICH STOKES

MORE than 100 fathers and grandfathers in Swadlincote were sent back to school today to take part in a special literary event with pupils.

St Edward’s Primary School, in Newhall Road, invited male relatives to get in on the act this week to celebrate World Book Day, an annual charity event aiming to inspire children to explore the excitement of reading.

Jayne McQuillan, head teacher, said: “Dads don’t always get the chance to spend time with their kids in a classroom environment.

“The day is about providing male relatives with that opportunity and also giving the children time to spend with male role models.”

As part of the activities, the children, staff and guests were asked to dress up as their favourite characters from literature.

This year’s theme, ‘All About George’, saw pupils and fathers, stepfathers, and grandfathers, take part in activities related to books starring characters of the same name, including writing a new Harry Potter story and building a 4ft (1.21m) tall model of Hogwarts.

Mrs McQuillan added: “I don’t know who had more fun with that, the children or the dads.”

The school has held the event for more than 10 years with 114 male relatives attending the celebrations this week.
