Blacksmith creates chicken sculpture for farm

Written byBY MARK MCKAY

A BURTON blacksmith has made a metal sculpture of a chicken for a South Derbyshire farm.

Blacksmith Hayley Powell created the piece of metal art, called Baby Betty, which will be displayed at Betty’s Farm, a free range chicken farm, in Willington.

Hayley, 23, who runs her own blacksmith business, Forever Forged at Clay Mills, said it was an ‘honour’ to create the five foot tall sculpture.

She said: “I have done other bits of specialist art before but this is my most recent one.

“It starts as an idea and then it has to be built into a wire model made out of mesh.

“There is a lot of designing and drawing initially before you get to the final piece.”

Hayley, who has run Forever Forged for two years, said she hopes to bring blacksmith skills into the 21st century.

She said: “I like to give my projects a modern twist.

“You spend so much time getting the idea so it can be a bitter sweet when you have finished.”
