A RECORD number of youngsters signed up for this year’s summer reading challenge in Staffordshire.
A total of 14,098 young county bookworms took part in the national reading scheme, which was supported by Staffordshire County Council.
The fun, aimed at Staffordshire school children aged four to eleven, is designed to keep youngsters reading during the long summer holidays.
County councillor Mike Lawrence said: “The challenge is great news for parents and carers too.
“It provides a free source of entertainment during the long school holidays - vital when household budgets are being stretched – and it’s educational.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the number of starters and completers this year, especially considering what a good summer it was.”
Forty six volunteers across Staffordshire assisted with running the challenge this year.
