THE home of Burton Albion will take centre stage during a prestigious women’s football tournament later this year.
The Pirelli Stadium will be renamed Burton Albion FC Stadium after it was announced as the venue for several games during the UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship in England, which is set to take place from November 26.
The tournament features England as hosts and seven of the best European women’s sides, all of which will be based at the national football centre, St George’s Park.
Tournament director Adrian Bevington said: “This tournament is a fitting finale to the FA 150 year celebrations.
“We have chosen several venues as they provide great facilities only an hour away from St George’s Park where the teams will be based.
“A final tournament is always a great spectacle and I’d encourage supporters to come and enjoy the games.”
The Mail has also revealed that stars of the future and dignitaries from across Europe will head to Burton Town Hall for a live draw to see who will play who in the tournament on October 24.
England will play a game at the Pirelli on December 2 before staging the semi-finals on December 5 and the third-place play-off on Sunday, December 8.
Games have been scheduled in both the daytime and evening to provide schools, fans and families the chance to attend.
England women’s U17 coach Lois Fidler added: “Holding the finals in England provides our young stars with a real chance to shine and I’m confident the clubs and partners will attract lots of fans to see the games.”
