A 21-YEAR-OLD with dreams of being a primary school teacher has been banned from the roads after being caught drink driving.

Burton Magistrates’ Court heard that Nathan Cholerton had been through tragedy of losing two family members in a month before he got behind the wheel of his Fiat Punto after a night of double vodkas.

On May 3 at 2.55am police noticed a car at the traffic lights, in Union Street, Burton, with its hazards on. It later swerved into the centre of the road.

John Peel, prosecuting, said: “He was stopped by police who said he smelt of alcohol. He gave a positive roadside breath test and officers said he was unsteady on his feet.”

The test revealed he had 116 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Nick Wright, defending Cholerton, who has no previous convictions, said his client has failed his third year at university studying child and youth studies after he lost his grandmother and great grandmother in one month and is now receiving counselling.

Mr Wright added: “He was the one who held other people together to his own detriment - he realised something was going wrong and he is having counselling.

He has done something about it which shows he can get through the perils of drink driving.

“My client pleaded guilty at first opportunity after being fully cooperative with police. He has no sensible answer as to why he drove but knows he shouldn’t have driven.”

A pre-sentence report made on Cholerton, who works at his stepfather’s bar, said on the night he had money in his car for a taxi but ‘went back to his car and because he was highly intoxicated thought it would be fun to put music on and then decided to drive the car.’

Cholerton, of Brayfield Road, Littleover, was banned for 26 months, a 12 month community order and 200 hours unpaid work. He was fined £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
