Burton flat refusal over flooding

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

PLANS to turn empty offices in Burton town centre into two flats have been refused over flooding issues.

Mr G Mann had applied to East Staffordshire Borough Council for permission to turn 128A New Street into one and two bedroom flats.

The application states that the need for residential development in East Staffordshire is currently very high, and this has resulted in local house prices which remain high, and an ever-growing waiting list for those who are unable to afford housing on the local market, and are waiting for affordable housing.

Despite a flood risk assessment being submitted saying it is sited ‘in an area likely only to be flooded during an extreme event’, planners refused permission because ‘insufficient information has been submitted to demonstrate that the flats would not be at an unacceptable risk of flooding.’
