THE official opening of an historic shop which is moving premises tomorrow could be delayed after phone lines have still not been installed.

Peter Massey, manager at Massey’s, has said the DIY and gardening company could lose up to £2,000 a day in lost trade if its 30 phone lines are not connected from a telephone exchange just metres away from the family-owned shop, in Swadlincote Road, Woodville.

Mr Massey said: “Tomorrow should be the opening but we cannot trade as we need the phone lines so we wouldn’t be able to open the shop.

“We spoke to BT in October and ordered 30 phone lines to move into the shop. The telephone exchange is actually just the width of the road and over two pavements and yet BT haven’t been able to attach wires yet.

I have never heard such drivel from them. They say they need a hoist to get things up. They have had all sorts of issues just to get a line over the road.”

However, the opening could be set to go ahead on time as a spokesman for BT said: “We are sorry for the delay in getting this completed. However we have two engineers, along with a hoist, due to attend this work on Monday.

“If all goes well and to plan the work should be completed same day.”

Established in 1947, Massey’s has occupied its former site for more than 20 years but has now outgrown it, and the new 28,000sq ft store, two-and- a-half times larger than its existing premises.

For its opening tomorrow, people who believe they might be the business’ longest serving customers are being invited to help cut the ribbon.

Anyone who thinks they fit the description should call Peter Massey on 01283 217133.
