UP TO FORTY buildings in a Burton industrial estate have been plunged into darkness after an electrical fault left nearly an entire street without power.
Businesses based in Hawkins Lane reported huge losses of revenue as a result of the black-outs.The electricity supply went down in Hawkins Lane yesterday morning and had not been restored by the time the Mail went to press.
Shazad Riaz, who co-owns Speedy’s Wheels and Tyres, said: “We were not able to serve any of our customers all day because we had no electricity. We could not do any work.
“We lost the revenue for the entire day’s worth of business. I would estimate that the power cut cost the business between £500 and £600. We employ three or four Businesses suffer as power cut hits industrial estate By Joshua Taylor joshua.taylor@burtonmail.co.uk members of staff and they couldn’t do any work without power, so they all went home early.” He added: “I am not quite sure how the power was turned off but there were engineers there most of the day.
“We were quite frustrated. It is quite a tough time for businesses at the moment and things like this don’t help.” The electricity provider promised to work tirelessly to fix the problem.
Victoria Blake, a spokesman for electricity company E.On, said: “The whole of Hawkins Lane is affected. This is up to 40 customers.
“There is a problem with some underground network cables. We have engineers on site working to restore power and they will keep working until the problem is resolved.
“We are working to get everyone’s electricity back as quickly as possible and we apologise to anyone who has suffered as a result of the power cuts.”
