CHARGE! VIKINGS DEFEND THEIR SCHOOL FROM ATTACK BY LEGIONS OF INSURGENT TROOPS ON HISTORY DAY

Written byADRIAN JENKINS

SWASHBUCKLING pupils have defended their school against hordes of bloodthirsty invaders during a Viking day.

Eight and nine-year-olds at Foremarke Hall, Repton’s preparatory school, stopped their imaginary enemies from conquering the school’s 50-acre grounds.

Earlier, the Year Four pupils painted boats and sails and made decorative swords after being divided into tribes and given Viking names.

They also tried weaving before following their mock battle by entering woodland to take part in a treasure hunt featuring clues written in runes, ancient Viking script.

Pauline Christodoulou, head of Foremarke’s lower school, said: “Everyone had a great day and the children learned plenty about the Vikings.”

The pupils plan to follow their exploits by visiting Repton School to see Viking sites including the Old Trent, where Vikings arrived on longships in 873.
