THE National Brewery Centre in Burton has been labelled ‘one of Europe’s must see museums’ by a world-famous American newspaper.
The museum, which reopened earlier this year, has been highlighted in the travel section of the Los Angeles Times as one of three European museums to look out for.The article stated: “In terms of new and refurbished museums in Europe, why not try England’s National Brewery Centre.
“The centre opened in May and yes, we’re talking about a beer museum.
“The centre is the latest incarnation of what was once the Bass Museum and then the Coors Visitor Centre, which closed two years ago.
“The town of Burton was golden lager central in the 19th century, and this brewing tradition plays out through living history characters, exhibits (including a portrait show called ‘Beer Mugs’) and artifacts. Why not give it a try.” A spokesman for the newspaper said: “Burton is well known across the United States for its brewing history.
“With the museum reopening, we thought it would be worth highlighting the fact to the readers of our travel section.
“We hope it will encourage more people to visit the town and enjoy the centre.” The Horninglow Street attraction reopened in May, marking the end of a keenly-fought battle to retain a focal point to celebrate the town’s rich brewing history.
Originally home to the Bass Museum, the venue was succeeded by the Coors Visitor Centre until it closed amid public outrage during the summer of 2008, with the US-owned brewer insisting it was too costly to keep open in its current form.
However, following a Mail-led campaign, which saw thousands of names added to a petition handed into the Government, as well as a protest march through the streets of the town centre, private leisure operator Planning Solutions Ltd stepped in to bring the attraction back to life.
A spokesman for the centre said: “We have had a lot of interest from abroad, with a beer writer from Canada coming over a couple of months ago to have a tour. We are really pleased with what the LA Times has said about us and we hope that it will alert people in America to what we have on offer here.”
