A GROWING number of older people with cancer across Burton will now receive additional support and information thanks to the success of a pilot project.

The success of the pilot, jointly funded by Macmillan and the Big Lottery Silver Dreams Programme, has lead to the announcement of further investment from Macmillan to extend the pilot beyond the initial 18 months and to increase the reach of the service to make it Staffordshire wide.

The Advocacy on the Wards project is an initiative started by the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) in conjunction with Macmillan.

The project began in July 2012 with a primary aim of providing effective and independent advocacy support to older people affected by cancer.

It supported them to speak out and get their views heard on decisions related to their treatment and care to various health organisations.
