Care firm develops delicious OAP dishes

Written byROB SMYTH

A CARE home company has created a cookbook – made up of recipes from its residents.

Elder Homes Group, which runs homes in Ashby Road and Stapenhill Road, Burton, sent out a questionnaire asking residents for their favourite meals.

The book ensures meals are cooked the way residents like and that menus can be planned to their tastes.

Paul Buck, facilities director, said: “The group reviews its menus on an annual basis to ensure client satisfaction, and this is carried out in conjunction with the service users questionnaires that are completed every January.

“We have strived for years to increase the standard of quality, so this year we are creating a central ‘cookbook’ of recipes, methods and ingredients which all the cooks will use to ensure they are all cooking in the same way.

“Involving residents in the decision-making process of which meals to include in the menus encourages thoughtfulness and interaction.”

The recipe book was put together after the company held a chef day at its homes, as part of its on-going campaign to constantly improve the standard of meals for residents.

Catering manager Csaba Nyitrai created sample meals, according to the questionnaires carried out at each home which asked which meals the residents would like.

He said: “Not only is providing the right nutrition essential to the care of the elderly, and particularly those with dementia, but involving residents in the decision making process of which meals to include in the menus encourages thoughtfulness and interaction.

“The day was a wonderful success with many meals created,

“These included black pudding and scrambled egg for breakfast, pork and apple casserole for lunch and sultana muffins for tea.”
