A CARER for the elderly is gearing herself up for a bid to be named Miss Great Britain.
Courtney Thurgood, of Overseal, revealed she was set to battle it out with 55 other budding beauties in attempt to win the coveted title.
The 20-year-old Mount Pleasant Residential Home worker was selected to take part after scooping a host of awards at the Miss Derby competition.
The former William Allitt School pupil said: “Earlier this year I had an email about doing Miss Derby, so I worked with my family and I put myself forward for an interview to see if I got a place, which I did.
“I placed in the top five and came away with three titles – Miss Charity, Miss Popularity and Miss Publicity.
“Although I didn’t win a regional, because I won three titles in Miss Derby I was put forward to the wild card round.
“I then had to write a speech and was awarded the title of Miss Popularity and given a place in the grand final of Miss Great Britain, competing against 55 girls of various ages who won their regional heats.
“I had never seen myself doing pageants, but was encouraged to go for it by family and friends and I loved it.
“The whole buzz of meeting all the girls, doing preparations and getting dressed up is an amazing feeling.
“When I got the email to say I had won the title Miss Popularity and had a place in the grand final I was completely shocked. I couldn’t believe it.
“Since finding out, I have been doing some personal training with fundamental fitness and I am also raising money for Rainbows Children’s Hospice.
“I have recently filmed my talent for Miss Great Britain, where I am doing a demo of gymnastics.
“I am trying to represent and be a role model for younger girls wishing to partake in these events, and to show anything is possible if you believe in yourself.”
Anyone who would like to vote for Courtney can text MISSGB 41 to 64343 or call 09075 989899 and, when prompted, enter 41.
The Miss Great Britain contest will take place in November.
